Strategic litigation to advance the protection against various types of discrimination

Discrimination is a serious violation of human rights. It prevents people from living their lives to the fullest and enjoying  their human rights simply because they are treated differently from others. Discrimination against a specific group often underlies the society is suffering from multiple systemic problems.

Everyone has the right to be protected against discrimination based on race, colour, gender, sexual identity, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, age, disability or other status.

In Belarus, our work is typically focused on discrimination based on political opinion. Our clients were persecuted in the following ways:

  • imprisonment and fine payment for participating in peaceful pro-democratic assemblies;
  • dismissal by state-owned enterprise for expressing a political opinion or for being a member of an independent trade union;
  • disbarment of lawyers who represented political prisoners;
  • individuals classified as ‘extremists’ for conducting a journalist investigation on corruption.

Furthermore, In Latvia and Poland, we defend the rights of non-white forced migrants and refugees, who, unlike white refugees, are denied access to the procedure for international protection.

We seek to expand the range of discrimination cases to protect as many representatives of vulnerable groups as possible. If you have experienced discrimination, want to have your rights restored, and want to protect others from being discriminated against, we are willing to help.
